Health Tip of the Week: How to Naturally Help Motion Sickness

The American Phytotherapy Research Laboratory in Salt Lake City has conducted a classic study on motion sickness, which may cause you to leave the dramamine on the shelf during your next vacation.

By spinning motion sickness-prone students in two groups-one group was given Dramamine, the other group ginger -- it was discovered that the group given the ginger was able to withstand the full 6 minute "spin" with less nausea and dizziness, while the other group stopped the ride within 4-1/2 minutes.

Japanese researchers believe the gingerols found in ginger, may be responsible for blocking the body's reflex to vomit. Taking 1/4 teaspoon 20 minutes before a car or boat trip should give you about 4 hours of relief. Another popular remedy is 3 or 4 slices of sliced ginger in a cup of boiling water to make ginger tea. Sip as needed to relieve nausea caused by motion sickness.

Creamy Parlor Style Vanilla Ice Cream

This ice cream is the creamiest vanilla ice cream you will have ever tried! My friend (who owns a restaurant and is brilliant in the kitchen I might add) gave me the tip of folding in Cool Whip to make your ice cream like parlor style soft serve and wow, does it make it so much better! It freezer just a little bit softer and just is oh so creamy! This recipe has become my go to recipe and it will be the base for many creations to come!

2 1/2 cups whip cream
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 tube Cool Whip

Mix all ingredients together until sugar is dissolved. Freeze/churn in ice cream maker. When the ice cream is to a desired thickness fold in Cool Whip. Put the ice cream in the freezer to further set.

Ginger Snaps

I’m taking part in a Christmas Baking Exchange this year with some other wives and some mom’s (we just get so domestic in those seasons of life!). I’m really excited about it and this recipe is the one I am using for my choice contribution. It’s a great recipe, easy to do, and practically fool proof!

Rating: I give these a 5 (1 being "I'll never bake them again" and 5 being "They are now one of my favorites")

2/3 cup Butter
1 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Molasses (I always add a little more!)
1 Egg
2 tsp Baking Soda
2 cup Flour
1/2 tsp Cloves
1/2 tsp Ginger
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Cinnamon

Mix all ingredients well. Roll into little balls and then roll them in sugar. Bake in 350 degree oven 10-12 minutes. And then Simply enjoy!

Tip: These cookies freeze great and are also great to do ginger bread men with!

Have any good ideas, or substitutes for this....share them, leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you!!

Zucchini Bread

I found this great recipe over at Fresh Plate. I liked it, but I made a couple of changes (a little less sugar, a little more whole wheat etc.) so I thought I would post it and share it with you all. It's so tasty and wonderful! Great for fall and for all those overnight guests, not sure what to serve them sort of thing (It freezes great! I have 4 in my freezer right now!)

3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
3 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup canola oil
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups zucchini, shredded
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking powder

In a large bowl, mix the sugars, eggs, oil, vanilla and shredded zucchini. Mix well. Stir in the flours, salt baking soda, cinnamon and baking powder. Mix until all ingredients smooth into a batter. Pour into two bread pans sprayed with cooking spray. Bake at 325 for 1 hour. Cool on a wire rack.

Baking My Way: Chocolate Chunk Pecan Brownies

This brownie is a great one! It's nothing too fancy but just a whole lot of chocolate! It's nice having the pecans in there too; it's add a little more decadence to it. This brownie would be great with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce!

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 ounces semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 cup chopped pecans

PREPARATION:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13x9" baking pan. In medium saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Add sugar, vanilla and eggs; blend well. Add flour, cocoa and salt; mix well. Stir in chocolate and pecans. Pour into greased pan.

Bake for 30-40 minutes or until set. Cool 1 hour or until completely cooled. Cut into bars.

Baking Goal: White Texas Sheet Cake

Doesn't this look so good? It's cake like this that I could eat the whole sheet of it if I let myself.
Check out the great recipe at A Well-Seasoned Life

Rocky Road Ice Cream

I have a small ice cream maker (1 quart with using both bowls) so I have a little bit of a hard time finding recipes that are sized right for my machine.  I also really wanted a Rocky Road ice cream recipe but I couldn't find any that I liked so I made one! This recipe makes 1/2 a quart so it's the perfect small serving for 2 or the indulgent serving for one!

Ingredients:

(Here's the recipe for some seriously good Rocky Road Fudge Bars)

Directions:

Prep Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 30 mins

(This ice cream is so good I forgot to take a picture before I started eating!)

  1. Place freezer bowl of ice cream maker into the freezer. (24 hours before you want to make your ice cream)
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the milk and granulated sugar until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Stir in the heavy cream and vanilla to taste.
  4. Stir in cake mix, making sure there are no lumps.
  5. Pour mixture into the freezer bowl and let mix until it has thickened (about 15-25 minutes).
  6. Add Rocky Road pieces and let mix until pieces are well mixed in.
  7. Remove ice cream from freezer bowl and place into a separate container.
  8. Place freezer bowl and the ice cream into the freezer to further harden.

Health Tip Of The Week: How To Cure Heat Rash

Usually at the beginning of a trip down south during the winter, or the first couple times I am out in the hot sun in the summer I get heat rash. It’s annoying, and sometimes frustrating to get rid of. Here are some ideas to try if you have a similar problem and an explanation of what heat rash really is!

Perspiration helps to regulate your body temperature by cooling you down as it evaporates through your skin. Donning tight-fitting clothes in fabrics such as nylon and polyester traps sweat and heats up your skin, causing it to swell and plug sweat ducts. Heat rash occurs when these blocked ducts force sweat to trickle into your skin rather than out of it. This problem usually develops on clothed areas of your body, such as the abdomen, neck, upper chest, back, groin and armpits.

When you have heat rash, the first thing you must do is to cool down your body. Find an air-conditioned or cool room where you can relax while your body cools off. Alternatively, take a cold shower or bath to minimize the prickly sensation on your skin. Meanwhile, you might want to consider trying one or more of these home remedies:

1. Ice pack. Cooling your skin is a number one priority to prevent heat rash from raging further. Pack some ice cubes into a sealed plastic bag and wrap it in a dishcloth. Apply to the affected areas for five to ten minutes at a time. Repeat every four to six hours.
2. Powdered bath. Baking soda or fine-ground oatmeal powder works wonders to ease the itch from a heat rash. Add a few tablespoons of either to your tepid bath water and stir it well so that it dissolves completely. Then, enjoy a good soak in the tub. You will feel refreshed and more comfortable as your rash heals.

3. Dusting. After a cold bath or shower, dust yourself thoroughly with baking soda, cornstarch or an absorbent powder such as unscented talcum powder. This helps absorb some of the excess moisture that causes heat rash. Reapply these powders as often as possible, rinsing and drying yourself well beforehand.
4. Lotions. Smooth mentholated or calamine lotion on your skin to cool the irritated areas. Alternatively, gently apply the gel from an aloe vera leaf, a plant well-known for its healing and soothing properties. Do this two or three times per day and remember to wash the affected areas thoroughly before reapplication. Avoid thick or oily ointments and creams, as they can worsen the condition.
5. Air-dry. If you have developed blisters due to a severe heat rash, do not bandage or cover them. Instead, expose the rash as often as you can to fresh air. This helps the skin to heal more quickly.

Avoid wearing constrictive clothing and fabrics that inhibit perspiration from evaporating properly. Put on comfortable, loose-fitting, cotton clothes, especially if the weather is hot and humid. Watch your weight carefully, as those who are overweight or obese tend to sweat more and are therefore predisposed to heat rash.

Baking my way through

I'm a little boring with my baking. I tend to go for what catches my eye, and more often then not what's easy. If I like the picture but then I read the instructions and it doesn't seem easy I don't give the recipe another thought. Then when I go to parties I always try these great deserts and wonder why I don't do that myself. I stick to what I know I like...So I've decided that I am going to bake my way through my favorite cook book. This book has over 175 recipes so it's going to take me a while but I'm excited!

I've done a few of the recipes already:

Snickerdoodles
Two-in-One Holiday Bar
Yuletide Slice
Ginger Snaps
Split Seconds
Peanut Butter Crunch Bars
Peanut Butter Balls
Peanut Blossoms
Orange Cappuccino Drops
Linzar Stars
Caramel Sandwich Cookies
Mint Brownies
Cranberry and Vanilla Chip Cookies

So at least I have a start, but like I said, there's over 175 recipes, so this might take a really long time! Either way it's going to be interesting to see all the different things I now try and to finally get through a whole cook book. I hate having so many cook books but only using a few recipes from each, I feel like that's such a waste!

So here goes! Look forward to a lot of baking!!
